Write Request Handling for Static Wear Leveling in Flash Memory (SSD) Controller

چکیده
The lifetime of a solid-state drive (SSD) is limited because of the number of program and erase cycles allowed on its NAND flash blocks. Data cannot be overwritten in an SSD, leading to an out-of-place update every time the data are modified. This result in two copies of the data: the original copy and a modified copy. This phenomenon is known as write amplification and adversely affects the endurance of the memory. In this study, we address the issue of reducing wear leveling through efficient handling of write requests. This results in even wearing of all the blocks, thereby increasing the endurance period. The focus of our work is to logically divert the write requests, which are concentrated to limited blocks, to the less-worn blocks and then measure the maximum number of write requests that the memory can handle. A memory without the proposed algorithm wears out prematurely as compared to that with the algorithm. The main feature of the proposed algorithm is to delay out-ofplace updates till the threshold is reached, which results in a low overhead. Further, the algorithm increases endurance by a factor of the threshold level multiplied by the number of blocks in the memory.

Development Write Performance by Enhancing Internal Parallelism of Solid State Drives
Most research of Solid State Drives architectures rely on Flash Translation Layer (FTL) algorithms and wear leveling; however, internal parallelism in Solid State Drives has not been well explored. Although Flash Memory based Solid State Drive (SSD) exhibits high performance and low power consumption, a critical concern is its limited lifespan along with the associated reliability issues. In this paper, we propose to build a Content-Aware Flash Translation Layer (CAFTL) to enhance the endurance of SSDs at the device level. With no need of any semantic information from the host, CAFTL can ...

متن کاملWeLe-RAID: A SSD-Based RAID for System Endurance and Performance
Due to the limited erasure/program cycles of flash memory, flashbased SSDs need to prolong their life time using wear-leveling mechanism to meet their advertised capacity all the time. However, there is no wear-leveling mechanism among SSDs in RAID system, which makes some SSDs wear out faster than others. Once any one of SSDs fails, reconstruction must be triggered immediately. But, the cost o...
متن کاملExtending the lifetime of flash-based storage through reducing write amplification from file systems
Flash memory has gained in popularity as storage devices for both enterprise and embedded systems because of its high performance, low energy and reduced cost. The endurance problem of flash memory, however, is still a challenge and is getting worse as storage density increases with the adoption of multi-level cells (MLC). Prior work has addressed wear leveling and data reduction, but there is ...
